Overview
The City and Regional Planning Department in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full-time lecturer for the 2026-27 academic year.
JOB SUMMARY
The City and Regional Planning Department seeks a full-time lecturer with a record of teaching (either demonstrated or with the potential for success) in one or more of the following areas: community planning, urban design, and Geographic Information Systems. The position is for the 2026–27 academic year, which will be Cal Poly’s first year on the semester system. This position is eligible for re-appointment for one additional year, subject to satisfactory performance and departmental needs.
Candidates shall demonstrate the ability to lead either community planning studios or urban design studios. Teaching includes laboratory (studio) and lecture-format courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Learn-by-doing and project-based learning is the preferred teaching model. Studios may require working will real community clients such as cities, counties, or community-based organizations. Candidates who demonstrate proficiency in GIS will have a competitive advantage.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.

About the DepartmentOne of five departments in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the award-winning Department of City and Regional Planning offers two PAB-accredited professionally-oriented programs - a Bachelor of Science (BSCRP) and a Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP). The bachelor's program provides strong preparation in land use, physical planning, and urban design. The master's program prepares graduates to provide leadership in urban and environmental planning and policy.
There is a joint Master degree in Transportation Planning with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Interdisciplinary courses are offered with other college departments and there is a common interest in sustainability and collaboration. The Department has strong links to the California planning profession.
