The English Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking a full‑time, academic‑year, tenure‑track Assistant Professor to begin August 17, 2026. The position specializes in Creative Writing (Nonfiction) and Latinx/e American literature, and welcomes applicants with secondary specialties in Afro‑Latinx/e literature, Latinx/e avant‑garde/experimental writing, migration studies, border studies, hybrid forms, translingualism, documentary literature, or other related genres.

A Ph.D. in Creative Writing, English, or a related field is required.

Salary: $90,276 – $98,244 per year (or $7,523 – $8,187 per month), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research, professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department, college, and university levels. The typical teaching load is 12 units per semester, with a reduction in the first two years to support the establishment of a research program.

Cal Poly anticipates a potential transition to semester‑based year‑round operations (YRO). Under YRO, full‑time academic‑year faculty may teach in two consecutive semesters, with the possibility of an additional third semester for extra compensation, depending on departmental needs and university policy.

The English Department is one of the largest academic units within the College of Liberal Arts. It offers BA and MA degrees in English, an English minor, a Linguistics minor, and certificates in Teaching English as a Second Language and Technical Communication. The department supports approximately 300 majors and manages many courses that satisfy general education and breadth requirements.
