The Architecture Department in the College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED) invites applications for a tenure‑track Design Plus position (Design + Representation or Design + History, Theory, and Criticism). The position begins on August 17, 2026.
Design + RepresentationWe seek candidates with strong teaching and scholarship in design fundamentals, especially representation—drawing, image‑making, modeling, and fabrication. Proven experience teaching design fundamentals (studio and representation courses) and a collaborative approach to curriculum development are essential. Candidates should promote inclusive learning environments for undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include foundation design studios, large lecture courses on contemporary and historical issues in representation, workshops in representational methods, and seminars.
Research interests will be supported through seminar teaching and core curriculum integration, with opportunities to progress into a leadership role.
Applicants should have a record of teaching, scholarship, and service in architectural history, theory, and criticism, with an emphasis on social/environmental justice, community engagement, race, gender, ethnicity, and inclusive practice. Teaching will involve design studios, large lecture courses, and seminars in architectural history and related topics. Candidates must demonstrate collaborative curriculum development and inclusive teaching.
Review of applications begins January 12, 2026 and continues until the position is filled. Salary and teaching assignments are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated hiring range: $97,008 – $103,644 per year.
About The DepartmentThe Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Architecture Department offers a rigorous five‑year Bachelor of Architecture program emphasizing application, collaboration, and project‑based learning. Core design studios are coordinated with a co‑requisite stream in representation, and students encounter history, theory, and criticism through large‑lecture courses and seminars. Students further their global perspective through semester and year‑long off‑campus programs, culminating in a thesis. The department boasts extensive fabrication facilities, a nine‑acre outdoor laboratory, and an indoor demonstration lab.

- Master’s degree in architecture (or allied discipline) or
D. Arch. - Architectural license or Ph.D. (see note below)
- Professional experience in architecture
- Relevant college‑level teaching experience
- A body of work corresponding to the advertised position
Appointments may be offered to candidates eligible for licensure or nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD). Promotion and tenure are contingent on an architecture license or Ph.D.
Preferred QualificationsAdditional consideration will be given to candidates with professional experience or specialization in research that addresses social and environmental equity in the built environment.
