Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Clinical Services Director, the role of this position is to oversee daily administration and operations such as establishing appropriate procedures and protocols, proficiency testing, quality control, departmental quality assurance, lab safety, measures, work schedules, supplies and billing review. The incumbent also provides lead work direction, involving training employees, scheduling laboratory staff, assigning and reviewing work, and providing input to employee selection and performance evaluations.

The incumbent is accountable for maintaining all laboratory certifications and accreditations. The Lead CLS also performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests, including performance of high and moderate complexity testing in addition to waived clinical laboratory tests as defined by CLIA, ensuring accurate collection and proper handling of specimens, including phlebotomy and preparation of specimens, to maintain specimen integrity. The Lead CLS II will monitor the usage of automated and manual data and reporting systems, such as a laboratory information system to maintain laboratory records of laboratory tests conducted, monitor patient data and information accuracy to prepare reports.

The purpose of Campus Health & Wellbeing is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and well‑being by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional mental health, outreach, educational services and campus consultations.

Key Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of a clinical laboratory and clinical laboratory quality control procedures, protocols and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge about laboratory operations, including current accreditation standards and regulations.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control procedures and standards.
  • Ability to provide lead work direction to professional and support laboratory staff.
  • Possess skills, knowledge, and abilities consistent with State license including those related to phlebotomy and maintain current continuing education. Possess comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of clinical laboratory science and the use and care of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to develop procedures, quality control checks and instructions necessary for new or modified tests.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post‑secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible and diverse experience as a journey‑level Clinical Laboratory Scientist. (Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology)
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid current basic life support CPR certificate.
Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $87,960 - $107,220 Per Year

Classification Range: $76,572 - $111,552 Per Year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
