Position Description
Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager of Mechanical Trades, the Building Service Engineer performs independent and ongoing performance of preventive and general maintenance and repair work on a wide range of heating, ventilating, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, air conditioning, and water systems. In addition, the Building Service Engineer performs less sophisticated and comprehensive work on complex refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Department Summary
Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services;
Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability;
Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities Operations. Key Qualifications
- Operate, maintain, repair, perform corrective and preventive maintenance, and inspect heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and water systems and equipment.
- Test, adjust, and calibrate boiler and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and/or microprocessor control instruments.
- Test and chemically treat boiler, condenser, and cooling tower water and water from other systems.
- Maintain, inspect, diagnose, and make emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, refrigerant, air, and oil distribution systems.
Education and Experience
Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, cooling towers, and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience.
Licenses, Certificates, Degrees, Credentials
- Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire. This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Range: $71,976 - $86,016 per year
Classification Range: $71,976 - $104,844 per year
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
