Job Title
Equipment Operator – Centro San Luis
About the PositionUnder the general supervision of the Public Works Manager, the incumbent operates light‑to‑medium construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment for a variety of maintenance activities including excavating, trenching, sanitation collection, street cleaning, loading and related operations in accordance with all safety regulations.
Responsibilities- Operate a variety of equipment and trucks, including dump truck, water truck, compaction roller, crack sealer machine, backhoe, boom/lift truck, and street sweeper.
- Perform minor maintenance repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Inspect vehicles to ensure they are fully operational and meet safety standards.
- Monitor the work site to verify that all safety rules and regulations are followed, identify hazards, and report issues to the supervisor.
- Set safety cones and temporary signs; direct vehicular traffic around work sites with handheld flags.
- Work as a Street Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment.
- Ensure proper collection and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of light‑to‑medium construction equipment operating procedures used in excavating, loading, leveling, rough grading, repair, and related work.
- Understanding of construction and preservation of street and storm drain materials, methods, and practices.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental hazards of street maintenance work and safety precautions required to minimize them.
- Knowledge of city safety rules and regulations, traffic laws and regulations, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Ability to operate equipment safely and according to traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment; follow traffic laws, ordinances, and rules of heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to promote and follow safe work practices and establish effective working relationships with co‑workers.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instruction and procedures.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- San Luis resident.
