Academic Advisor I – Texas State University

Position:
Academic Advisor I – Provide quality academic advising to undergraduate students at Texas State University.

• Resume and cover letter.
• Three professional references.
• Copy of transcript showing completion of bachelor’s degree.

• Provide accurate and consistent information about major and degree requirements.
• Explain complex institutional policies and procedures.
• Plan and prepare for advising sessions.
• Engage with students in-person, virtually, and over the phone.
• Help students define realistic educational and career goals.
• Maintain confidential student records through accurate documentation.
• Review graduation applications and certify eligibility for graduation.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with academic units and partners.
• Advocate for solutions with fairness and integrity.
• Refer students to appropriate resources.
• Participate in recruitment and retention efforts.
• Recommend continuous improvement of advising services.
• Commit to ongoing professional development.
• Assist with related campus accreditation processes.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Documented work experience with college students or children/adolescents in a professional or volunteer capacity.
• Demonstrated skill using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Attention to detail demonstrated in cover letter and application.

• Master’s degree.
• Professional academic advising experience in higher education.
• Professional knowledge of Texas State academic policies and procedures.
• Experience using Degree Works audit software.
• Knowledge of NACADA core competencies, core values and theories of academic advising.

• This position requires occasional work outside of normal business days, including evenings and weekends.
