Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   • Teach ethnic studies courses as assigned, which may include day, online, evening, and weekend assignments
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and revision, including the assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Maintain expertise in current teaching methods and develop new instructional materials and techniques to meet the changing needs of students
  • Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials that will enhance offerings of the department and the division
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in other departments and colleges and in the community to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
  • Serve as a member of division and college committees
  • Perform other duties as required by contract and general institutional needs in a timely manner.

  • The effective use of technology in teaching, including online instruction
  • Skills and Abilities:

  • Recent experience in teaching or preparation to teach in a community college
  • Teach at a college level in a related field
  • Organize and explain ethnic studies concepts in ways appropriate to students' abilities, levels of preparation, learning styles, and cultural experiences
  • Use teaching methods that engage students, promote development of critical thinking skills, emphasize cooperation and collaboration, facilitate community engagement, promote social justice, and reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches grounded in the methodologies of ethnic studies
  • Develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing student achievement of those outcomes
  • Reflect on and critically evaluate pedagogy and implement changes to improve student learning
  • Experience with and willingness to participate in specialized programs, including learning communities, designed to encourage student success
  • Enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the teaching profession and the mission of the community college
  • Motivate students from diverse cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds
  • Ability, initiative, and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
  • Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through ongoing contributions to department, division, and college activities
  • Job Requirements:

    • Master's or above in African-American/Black/Africana Studies or Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, or Asian-American Studies, or Native American/ American Indian Studies OR Master's or above in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent (see below)
    • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.

    Preferred

    • A graduate degree in ethnic studies
    • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and other fields shape participation and outcomes
    • Willingness to examine and revise one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students more effectively
    • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
    • Experience in culturally-responsive teaching in ethnic studies
    • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within ethnic studies courses and classrooms
