Part‑Time Phlebotomy Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary

Schedule:

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows:

  • Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB) – $89.20 up to $130.94 per hour.
  • Lecture Course (Salary Schedule AJ) – $103.85 up to $151.07 per hour.

Months Per Year: Semester assignments as needed

Mandated Reporter: Yes

Campus Security Authority: No

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach classes as assigned in Phlebotomy.
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies.
  • Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs. The College offers day and evening classes.

    • Various successful clinical teaching techniques.
    • Understanding of current phlebotomy issues and trends.
    Skills and Abilities
    • Recent clinical experience in phlebotomy.
    • Willingness to update skills if needed.
    • Maintain certification and/or licensure by attending continuing education classes or home study courses.
    • Teach in clinical areas as assigned; may require evenings or weekends.
    • Actively participate and contribute to changes in the phlebotomy program at department and team meetings.
    • Commitment to staying abreast of new trends in phlebotomy and the clinical setting.
    • Commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in phlebotomy.
    • Ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress in the clinical setting.
    • Use teaching methods that engage students actively and encourage problem‑solving skills.
    • Adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students.
    • Assist students in acquiring, analyzing, and evaluating knowledge and skills in the clinical setting.
    • Collaborate with faculty and staff collegially at all departmental and institutional levels.
    • Reflect on and evaluate teaching effectiveness, modifying techniques to engage students.
    • Commit to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum.
    • Commit to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the community college mission.
    Job Requirements
    • Possession of any Bachelor's degree AND two years of phlebotomy experience OR any Associate degree AND six years of phlebotomy experience OR the equivalent.
    • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician with at least three years of experience in phlebotomy within the previous five years.
    • A current California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) in good standing.
    • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
    Degree, Academic, and Professional Equivalence
