The San Mateo Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer Lateral Candidates Only!
This is continuous recruitment.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a Lateral Candidate must have:
a) Possession of a California Basic POST Course Certificate with an exam certificate and a preferred T-score of 52 or above. Possession of a California POST Course Certificate (800 hours) issued within 3 years of the date of application. A copy of your certificate with your application is required in order for you to continue with the process.
AND
b) Currently employed or previously employed within the last 12 months with a California Law Enforcement Agency as a Peace Officer. A copy of your certificate with your application is required in order for you to continue with the process.

The Position: Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; control traffic flow and enforce state and local regulations; perform investigative work; participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs and do related police work as assigned. Duties and hours will vary with assignments.
The Department: Consists of a diverse group dedicated to public service, protecting and serving the citizens of San Mateo, and providing outstanding customer service. The department aims to provide creative and long-term solutions to ongoing issues.
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. An atypical way to obtain this would be:
- Age not less than 21 years old at time of appointment to the rank of police officer.
- Effective January 1, 2023, peace officers must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. There are no specific citizenship requirements per Senate Bill
2. California government Code Section 1031(h) limits employment authorization documents to those consistent with Section 274a.2 of Title 8 of the Code of Federal regulations. Specific documentation requirements can be found on the I-9 form issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Government Code section 1031(g) permits departments to adopt additional and/or higher standards. - Must maintain a current peace officer certification from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
- Free of any felony convictions.
- Equivalent to completion of an Associate's degree from an accredited college.
- Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.
- Must pass background investigation.
- Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.
License or Certificate
- Possession of a valid California driver's license and appropriate license classification as required.
- Possession of a California Basic POST Course Certificate of at least 800 hours issued within 3 years of the date of application.

Signing Bonus / Referral Award
Police Officers hired from this recruitment will receive a signing bonus of $1,500.00 upon successful completion of probation. If an eligible merit City employee refers a candidate who is subsequently hired from this recruitment, he/she shall receive a $1,500.00 referral award in accordance with the City’s Targeted Recruitment Program Policy.
