Position Status: Tenure-Track

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with decision‑making and exploration of educational, career, and personal goals.
  • Work with students to develop educational plans.
  • Review disability documentation to determine eligibility for services and accommodations; support the DSPS manager with MIS reporting.
  • Collaborate with DSPS students and instructors to determine reasonable academic accommodations.
  • Consult with faculty and staff on best practices for working with students with disabilities.
  • Provide professional development training for the college community regarding the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Provide disability counseling on learning strategies, self‑advocacy skills, campus and community support services, and recommended accommodations.
  • Connect students to on‑ and off‑campus services appropriate for their needs.
  • Adhere to the schedule developed with department chairpersons, which may include individual appointments, drop‑in sessions, workshops, and weekend or evening assignments.
  • Collaborate with instructional faculty to support institutional goals.
  • Promote a philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning.
  • Participate in counseling department meetings and required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations, community events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.
  • Engage in professional development activities at the departmental and college level.
  • Create a positive environment that supports student motivation and transfer readiness.
  • Maintain current knowledge of counseling techniques and effective student‑support interventions.
  • Conduct outreach targeting feeder high schools and community groups.
  • Serve as a member of the campus CARE (Behavioral Intervention) Team.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Demonstrate understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education/Experience):

  • Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, or
  • Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or
  • Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) credential, plus fifteen or more semester units in graduate coursework related to people with disabilities,
    or six semester units or equivalent practical experience in a postsecondary DSPS program or similar,
    or two years of full‑time experience in one of the following areas:
    • Counseling for students with disabilities;
    • Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military, or private social welfare organizations for persons with disabilities.
