About Marin Waldorf School
Marin Waldorf School is the only fully accredited Waldorf school in Marin County and an accredited member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America. MWS offers a comprehensive educational journey through a vibrant parent/toddler program, two preschools, two kindergartens, and a full grades program (grades 1–8). Our 10-acre campus in Lucas Valley includes an oak grove, a biodynamic garden, a large playing field, play areas and gardens for every age from early childhood through eighth grade, a library, and a woodwork studio. Our expanded curriculum includes woodwork, handwork, choir, orchestra, physical and outdoor education, environmental and ecology education, gardening, eurythmy, Spanish, and Mandarin.
MWS sits in the heart of Marin County, 25–40 minutes from San Francisco, Berkeley, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa.
Position Summary
The Grades Teacher is the class teacher for one grade in our grades program, carrying a class through the main lesson curriculum and, in the Waldorf tradition, ideally accompanying the children over multiple years. The class teacher holds the daily and seasonal rhythm of the class, knows each child deeply, and serves as the primary point of connection between the school and the class's families.
This teacher works as part of a collaborative faculty, partnering with subject teachers, early childhood colleagues, and administration to bring the foundational and evolving Waldorf curriculum to life. We are looking for someone who brings joy, creativity, innovation, cultural-sensitivity and skill to the classroom, builds warm, trusting relationships with children and families of every background, and is committed to their own ongoing growth as an educator.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Curriculum
- Plan and teach the morning lesson curriculum and assigned practice periods, drawing on the foundational and evolving Waldorf curriculum for the grade.
- Establish a healthy daily, weekly, and seasonal rhythm that supports each child's learning, movement, and well-being.
- Maintain effective, warm, and consistent classroom leadership, in line with the school's behavior and community agreements.
- Ensure a diversity of perspectives is included in the curriculum.
- Observe and assess each child's progress, and write thoughtful reports.
- Keep the classroom and surrounding areas a beautiful, orderly, and welcoming learning environment.
- Communicate clearly and regularly with parents and guardians, including class meetings, parent-teacher conferences, written updates and phone calls.
- Build trusting partnerships with families from a wide range of cultures, languages, family structures, and life experiences.
- Participate in school festivals, assemblies, admissions events, and community gatherings.
- Attend weekly faculty meetings, in-service days, and other scheduled meetings, and contribute to committee work.
- Collaborate with subject teachers, learning support, and administration in support of each child.
- Engage in mentoring, evaluation, and ongoing professional development, including growth in equity-centered and culturally responsive teaching practice.
- Uphold school policies, including child-safety, mandated-reporter, and employee-student boundary requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Certificate of completion in Waldorf teacher training, or equivalent.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Previous Waldorf class teaching experience.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
