About the Role

We are looking for a skilled and experienced Fiber Engineer to support the planning, design, permitting, and execution of fiber optic network infrastructure across aerial, underground, and building-entry environments. You will lead or support projects involving both Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) systems, collaborating with field teams, city agencies, contractors, and internal stakeholders to deliver reliable and high-performing fiber networks.

This role is ideal for someone who can operate independently and take ownership of complex engineering efforts.

Key Responsibilities Fiber Design & Documentation
  • Design and document OSP/ISP fiber networks, including routing, duct/conduit planning, and termination points.
  • Produce and review detailed construction documents (AutoCAD, KMZ, redlines, splice diagrams, as-builts).
  • Develop accurate BOMs (Bill of Materials), cut sheets, and engineering packages for permitting and construction.
Field Work & Construction Support
  • Conduct site walks and field validations to align engineering plans with real-world conditions.
  • Review and approve as-built drawings, splicing diagrams, vault placements, and handhole positioning.
  • Troubleshoot in-the-field issues related to routing, splicing, or handoffs.
Testing & Quality Assurance
  • Validate OTDR, power meter, and light level test results to ensure fiber integrity.
  • Enforce construction and testing standards; reject or rework non-compliant work.
Permitting & Compliance
  • Prepare or support permit submissions for local, state, and federal jurisdictions (e.g., CALTRANS, municipalities).
  • Ensure designs comply with engineering codes and standards such as GO-95, GO-128, and NEC.
Project Engineering & Oversight
  • Support or lead multiple concurrent engineering efforts from planning through execution.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, construction teams, and external vendors.
  • Provide technical input on schedules, cost estimates, and routing alternatives.
  • Act as an engineering lead on larger or more complex deployments.
Collaboration & Mentoring
  • Partner with internal design teams, utility stakeholders, and permitting authorities to keep projects moving.
  • Mentor junior engineers and review their work for quality and compliance.
Required Skills & Tools
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, GIS tools, Google Earth, and/or 3

    GIS, KMZs
  • Understanding of fiber splicing, duct/conduit routing, and pole line analysis
  • Familiarity with OSP Insight (OSPI), Spatial

NET, or similar asset tracking platforms
  • Working knowledge of OTDR, power meter testing, and splicing packages
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and utility maps
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Teams, SharePoint)
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in fiber optic engineering
  • Field construction and testing experience preferred
  • Familiarity with permitting processes and jurisdictional submittal standards
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Nice to Have
  • Knowledge of 5G backhaul, DWDM, or multi-service metro networks
  • Experience with vendor management, utility coordination, and contractor oversight
  • Exposure to Node B, Hub, or MPOP design within buildings or co-located facilities
What Success Looks Like
  • On-time, compliant engineering deliverables
  • High-quality field integration and testing results
  • Positive collaboration with field crews, municipalities, and permitting agencies
  • Leadership in troubleshooting and mentoring peers
