Senior Bulk Materials Handling (BMH) Engineer
We are seeking a Senior / Lead Bulk Materials Handling (BMH) Engineer to join our established BMH department based in Woodlands, Gauteng, with hybrid working arrangements.
Role OverviewYou will be responsible for performing and overseeing all aspects of BMH design, including, but not limited to:
- Bulk storage arrangements (stockpiles, silos, bins, etc.)
- Building and plant layouts on the dry end
In addition, you will undertake general mechanical design tasks within the mining and EPCM sectors. This includes 3D modelling, preparation of technical drawings, and engineering calculations.
As a technical lead, you will manage multiple projects concurrently, from feasibility studies through to execution. You will be responsible for managing BMH resources and collaborating closely with project teams and the wider design office.
Qualifications- BEng / BSc or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering (essential)
- BMH-related courses or qualifications (advantageous)
- Professional Engineer Registration (Pr.Eng) (advantageous)
- 4-10 years' experience in Mechanical Engineering and Design within a related industry (essential)
- Minimum 3 years' experience in BMH design (essential)
- Lead or Project Engineering experience within an EPCM environment (advantageous)
- Competent in the fundamentals of mechanical design
- Experienced and competent in BMH design
- Proficient in general engineering designs and calculations
- Advanced computer literacy, including engineering-level programming
- Sound technical knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment (essential)
- Experience with in an EPCM / Mining environment (essential)
- Understanding of industry equipment and fabrication processes (advantageous)
- Proficient in using or learning a wide range of engineering software packages (essential)
- Familiarity with Design Office procedures (advantageous)
- Knowledge of applicable governing codes and standards (advantageous)
- BMH, mining, or heavy industry design experience (essential)
- Experience with automated or parametric modelling (Inventor or equivalent) (advantageous)
- Perform engineering calculations, analyses, and designs in compliance with governing codes and standards for mechanical disciplines
- Prepare functional and detailed design documentation
- Develop design programmes and calculators
- Provide expert consultation to project teams
- Assist with on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, and design audits
- Supervise draughting teams to ensure quality and accuracy
- Ensure compliance with relevant procedures and standards
- Support commissioning of assigned packages in line with project and vendor specifications
- Produce structured, accurate, complete, and well-presented technical reports
- Maintain proactive communication with project and design teams regarding discipline interfaces and problem-solving
- Contribute to the development of Engineering Design Criteria
- Develop fit-for-purpose engineering designs aligned with project budgets and specifications
- Evaluate customer specifications, scopes, and project estimates for mechanical design requirements
- Review design drawings to ensure compliance with design intent
- Provide technical input for tender documentation preparation
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with suppliers, site supervisors, and project teams
- Integrate vendor information seamlessly into the design process
- Coordinate integration of design information across disciplines
- Incorporate specialist consultants' designs into the overall project design
- Manage design schedules and ensure timely delivery of outputs
- Provide discipline-specific input into the Change Management process
- Identify and manage design risks, conducting formal peer reviews for high-risk designs
- Ensure adherence to Quality Management processes within the design office
- Oversee filing and archiving of design documentation
- Lead and manage the design team to deliver project objectives
- Liaise and coordinate with project managers and engineers from other disciplines to ensure compliance with project and client requirements
- Maintain professional and respectful written and verbal communication at all times
- Keep clients and project managers informed and up to date on technical design progress
- Share design lessons learned to promote continuous improvement
