This role is designed to ensure compliance, governance, monitoring and continuous improvement towards excellence in environmental management and sustainability. Providing assurance to the Executive Committee, Board, internal and external stakeholders in support of the Group’s Beyond Zero and Sustainability strategy.

To lead AECI’s environmental compliance, governance and monitoring and sustainability agenda through both technical excellence and purposeful communication. The role ensures robust environmental governance and compliance while driving green engagement, behavioural change, and sustainability storytelling across the Group. The incumbent will strengthen AECI’s stewardship position by embedding environmental awareness, climate action, and green innovation in the culture, communications, and operations of all businesses — in support of the Group’s purpose Net Zero, and “We Are One AECI for a Better World” strategy.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • To monitor, report, improve and provide oversight of environmental compliance in support of Beyond Zero and Sustainability best practices and legal compliance
  • To provide assurance to the Executive Committee, Board and relevant sub-committees, internal and external stakeholders, regarding environmental governance in support of being a leader in Sustainability
  • To formally represent AECI and its businesses to external stakeholders regarding environmental performance in support of a positive corporate reputation
  • To provide credible input into the Integrated Report and Sustainability Report in support of the corporate reputation and meeting the listed entity requirement and shareholder expectations
  • Assurance and compliance oversight – 2nd party assurance, ISO Audits, Licenses and Permits obligations
  • To compile Environmental Due Diligence Reports for potential acquisitions to support the Group’s growth strategy and proactively identify and mitigate business risks and support investment decisions
  • To proactively report potential legislative changes and emerging risks to the Group Compliance Officer to incorporate these into the Compliance Universe
  • To monitor, report, improve and provide oversight of relevant regulation, risk and governance
  • Support development programmes aligned with relevant selected UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reported in the Group’s Sustainability Report
  • Driving green engagement and awareness campaigns across the Group
  • Embedding sustainability culture and behaviour change in collaboration with the Group Sustainability Specialist
  • Supporting internal and external communications on AECI’s environmental sustainability, climate, and sustainability commitments
  • Showcasing and amplifying AECI’s sustainability story (e.g. through reports, campaigns, activations, partnerships, employee programmes)

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12
  • Post Graduate Degree in Environmental Management or Chemical/Environmental Engineering
  • 8 - 10 years experience within an Operations and Manufacturing environment (Chemical or Mining)
  • 5 - 10 years in Environmental Management within Operations and Manufacturing environments
  • Excellent understanding of Environmental Legislation
  • Experience in all fields of Sustainability
  • Experience in environmental management systems (ISO 14001, Responsible Care)
  • Experience in environmental reporting standards (CDP, WDP, DJSI, GRI, TCFD
