About the Role

Our client, a specialized aerospace engineering firm with a significant presence in Sandton, Gauteng
, is seeking a highly analytical and experienced Aircraft Stress Analyst. This role is integral to ensuring the structural integrity and safety of aircraft under various flight and ground load conditions. The Stress Analyst will be responsible for performing detailed structural analysis using advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, validating designs, and contributing to the certification of aircraft structures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and fatigue/fracture analysis, coupled with practical experience in aerospace applications.

This is a challenging role for an engineer passionate about structural design and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform linear and non-linear static and dynamic stress analysis on aircraft components and structures using FEA software (e.g., NASTRAN, ANSYS).
  • Develop and validate analytical models based on design drawings, material properties, and load cases.
  • Analyze results, identify potential failure modes (e.g., yielding, buckling, fatigue, fracture), and provide recommendations for design improvements.
  • Work closely with design engineers to ensure that structural requirements are met and that designs are optimized for weight and performance.
  • Conduct fatigue and crack propagation analyses to predict the service life of critical components.
  • Contribute to the generation of stress analysis reports for structural certification by regulatory authorities.
  • Assist in the interpretation of test data and correlate analytical results with experimental findings.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in structural analysis techniques and aerospace materials.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant aerospace standards and regulations (e.g., FAA, EASA, SACAA requirements).
  • Participate in design reviews and provide expert technical input on structural integrity matters within the Sandton engineering team.
Requirements
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field with a specialization in structural analysis.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in aircraft structural analysis, preferably within a design or certification environment.
  • Proven expertise in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (e.g., NASTRAN/PATRAN, ANSYS, ABAQUS) and associated pre/post-processors.
  • Solid understanding of solid mechanics, structural dynamics, material science, fatigue, and fracture mechanics.
  • Experience with aerospace loading conditions, standards, and certification processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data analysis and automation is a plus.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and manage project tasks within deadlines.
