Located in Sandton, we are committed to excellence and fostering lasting partnerships with our clients. For this role, we are recruiting on behalf of a specialist oncology unit in Modderfontein.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site position in Modderfontein for a Chemotherapy Nurse. You will be responsible for the safe mixing, preparation, and administration of chemotherapy agents according to South African oncology protocols and SANC guidelines. Key duties include:

  • Mixing and preparing chemotherapy in a sterile environment, following aseptic techniques and cytotoxic handling procedures.
  • Administering chemotherapy via various routes (IV push, infusion, central lines, PICC lines, or ports) with precision and care.
  • Obtaining medical aid authorisations (e.g., Discovery, Bonitas, Medscheme, GEMS) and liaising with funders for pre-approvals and motivation letters.
  • Monitoring patients before, during, and after treatment for adverse reactions, extravasation, or hypersensitivity.
  • Patient and family education on treatment plans, side effects, oral chemotherapy adherence, and when to seek emergency care.
  • Managing patient records on electronic systems (e.g., PMO, or similar) and maintaining accurate chemotherapy flow sheets.
  • Ensuring strict compliance with safety protocols: cytotoxic spill management, PPE usage, sharps disposal, and waste segregation.
  • Collaborating with oncologists, pharmacists, and radiographers to adjust doses based on blood results, body surface area (BSA), and renal/hepatic function.
  • Staying current with chemotherapy protocols, new targeted therapies, and advancements in oncology nursing.
Qualifications & Experience (South African Context)

Mandatory:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or equivalent) from a South African institution.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Completion of a chemotherapy certification program (or willingless to obtain one).
Proven proficiency in:
  • Chemotherapy drug preparation and mixing or must be willing to obtain if appointed.
  • Administration of cytotoxic agents
  • Managing extravasation and anaphylaxis protocols
  • Monitoring and documenting chemotherapy side effects
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy protocols common in South Africa.
  • Understanding of drug interactions.
  • SAOC Protocols and Formularies
  • Knowledge on ICON
Preferred:
  • Prior experience in oncology or chemotherapy administration (minimum 1‑2 years preferred).
  • Experience with medical aid authorisations – familiarity with oncology benefit codes, PMO, and formulary requirements.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and Microsoft Office for patient documentation.
Beneficial Certifications (South Africa recognised):
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Patient education & emotional support – ability to explain complex treatments with empathy, especially in a culturally diverse South African setting.
  • Teamwork – collaborate effectively with doctors, pharmacists, porters, and admin staff.
  • Problem‑solving – rapidly adjust doses for abnormal blood counts, manage vein access issues, or handle spillages.
  • Attention to detail – double‑check drug calculations, expiry dates, and patient IDs against treatment plans.
  • Stress resilience – remain calm during emergencies or high‑volume treatment days.
  • Communication – fluent in English (additional official languages like isiZulu, Afrikaans, or Sesotho advantageous).
Working Conditions & Compliance (South Africa)
  • Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and SANC scope of practice.
  • Located in Modderfontein. Own transport recommended but is not a requirement.
