Assistant Food Service Director

Job for Assistant Food Service Director at Camp Burgess & Hayward. Seasonal position March 2026 - November 2026. On‑site housing provided if needed.

The Assistant Food Service Director supports the Food Service Director in all aspects of food services operations for Camp Burgess & Hayward. During the summer camp season, this includes planning, preparing, and serving daily meals to 700 campers and staff across two kitchens. The Assistant directly oversees the Camp Burgess kitchen in summer, serving 300 people and supervising 9 seasonal staff.

In the off‑season (March–May, September–November), the team serves meals to schools and retreat groups ranging from 25 to 200 people. The Food Services team includes the Food Service Director, the Assistant Food Service Director, and approximately 18–20 seasonal staff.

• Safety
  :
  Ensures all safety regulations are met with proper food handling and storage. Maintains clean and safe kitchen work areas, stockroom, freezer, refrigerator, dining room, dish room, and loading area in accordance with State of Massachusetts health regulations. Prioritizes safety and dietary/allergy needs of the community.
• Operations
  :
  Helps manage day‑to‑day food service operations according to standards set by the MA Department of Health, American Camp Association, and South Shore YMCA. Duties include menu planning, ordering food, preparing meals for allergy‑releasing participants, and continuously improving meal quality.
• Facility Management
  :
  Ensures facilities are clean, safe, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive for guests.
• Staff Engagement & Development
  :
  Assists the Food Service Director in overseeing seasonal kitchen staff, providing training, supervision, and evaluation. Encourages staff commitment and goal achievement.
• Participant Engagement & Development
  :
  Builds relationships with participants, responds to inquiries, resolves problems, and creates a supportive community environment.

• 1–2 years of food service experience.
• Experience or ability to work within a summer camp setting; patience and kindness towards campers and counselors; support for a positive camp experience.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to develop positive working relationships with staff and other organizations.
• Responsible, patient, flexible, organized; able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
• Food Protection Manager certification and Allergen Awareness certification required within 30 days of hire.
• 21 + with a clean driver’s license.
• Experience working with youth preferred.

Able to climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit or stand for extended periods, lift or move up to 20 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
