Responsibilities
This is a regular full‑time, Bargaining Unit teaching position on track for continuing contract. The standard contract length is 196 days; however, other contract lengths may be available depending on department needs. Assigned campus locations may vary due to enrollment.
Teaching responsibilities include developing and implementing course curriculum in Journalism and Composition as well as overseeing students in the creation and publication of a College newspaper. Collaborating with colleagues to enhance curriculum and teaching methods. Engaging in professional development activities to stay up‑to‑date with the latest educational practices. Contributing to the College by actively participating in college service activities and determining and assessing student learning outcomes.

- Participating in department and college activities and committees including graduation
- Attending college wide meetings and trainings at various campuses and locations
- Plans, organizes, and teaches Journalism and Composition classes as assigned
- Makes use of professional growth opportunities, including but not limited to the Seminole State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning
- Incorporates teaching strategies relevant to the academic discipline that foster student learning, success and retention
- Engages students and supports student learning success in and beyond the classroom
- Maintains required office hours to provide assistance to students, both individually and in small groups; counsels students in matters relating to academic progress
- Works with other faculty in support of curriculum improvement as appropriate to promote students’ success and mastery of course and program competencies
- Complies with College policies and procedures in accordance with required deadlines
- Participates in day, evening, and weekend program staffing as required; assigned campus location may vary due to enrollment
- Participates in committee work as requested
- Contributes to a collegial and collaborative work environment
- Becomes actively involved with the diverse community that the College serves
- Works with other College departments to engage community partners that support the College Mission and Vision
- Performs all site and position specific responsibilities as assigned; tasks may include, but are not limited to, ordering and maintaining necessary supplies and equipment; participating in discipline‑related student activities (e.g., Brain Bowl) and attending graduation
- Maintains current licensure (if applicable) and knowledge of discipline and teaching methods
- Master’s degree in Journalism or Mass Communications
- Master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate hours in English required
- A PhD in Journalism, English or Literature
- Applicant with 3‑5 years’ experience teaching First‑year Composition and Literature courses
- Experience teaching Journalism and supervising a student publication
- Demonstrated understanding of the learning‑centered approach to teaching
- Experience utilizing technology and innovative pedagogy to deliver exceptional teaching and learning
- Online and/or hybrid teaching Learning Management System (LMS) and familiarity with Large Language Model (LLM)
- A personal and professional commitment to creating an atmosphere of quality instruction at Seminole State College
- English reading, writing and speaking skills at the native level of fluency
- Understanding of and commitment to the use of instructional technology
- Excellent, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous demeanor
- Works in a classroom/office environment
- May be required to travel between campuses and other local destinations
- May be required to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
