Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

The Peer Mentor assists the First Year Experience instructor as a teaching-team member, communicating and meeting with a small group of first year students (mentees), providing information about the campus, directing mentees to resources, sharing their experiences with first year students, holding office hours, and answering general inquiries.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with assignments or activities in the First Year Experience course and collaborates with instructor regularly.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships, and provides support and resource referrals for first-year students with focus on a smooth transition, acclimation, and campus involvement.
  • Participates in mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Communicates and works with fellow Peer Mentors to ensure a positive and collaborative group dynamic.
  • Completes weekly interaction log.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum SSC second year student by the fall term.
  • Maintain a 2.5 overall GPA and be in good academic standing throughout each semester.

  • Typing and word processing skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to locate and access campus departments and resources.
  • Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with students, peers, and staff including speaking in front of a group.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and deal with change.
WORK ENVIRONMENT And SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Commit to up to 5 hours a week for the First Year Experience Program.
  • Exact hours will differ based on student and office needs.

Pay Benefits And Work Schedule

$13.00 hourly up to 20 hours per week based on department needs, financial aid awards and budget constraints.

THIS IS A STUDENT POOL POSITION. Finalists and individuals recommended for employment at Seminole State College must reside in the State of Florida at the time of hire and may be subject to background investigations and fingerprinting in compliance with Florida Statute 1001.64; and Seminole State College Policy 1.020; 2.020. Criminal background checks and fingerprinting will be conducted for all new employees, and for rehired employees who have had a break in service for one year or more.
