Florida Department of Health in Seminole County is looking for a self-motivated, hardworking individual to fill our Nutrition Educator position in the WIC office.

Emergency duty may be required, including work in Red Cross shelters or other disaster responses. The position will maintain confidentiality and security of records as specified by departmental regulations and laws.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will function as the Nutrition Educator in the Casselberry or Sanford location of the DOH-Seminole WIC Program and report to the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Certifying eligible clients into the WIC Program, providing nutrition counseling and relevant health information to clients.
  • Referrals to other programs (Breastfeeding, Healthy Start, Prenatal Clinic, and other social services as needed).
  • Interact with WIC staff and occasionally the Executive Director of Nursing under supervision of a licensed nutritionist.
  • Assess clinical and anthropometric data and dietary histories; review growth charts; document in FL-WiSE; assign risk codes and food packages; manage formulas as per state guidelines; schedule high-risk follow-ups; maintain productive clinic flow.
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling and group nutrition classes to pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women, and caretakers of infants/children; document counseling and set goals; enter service codes in FL-WiSE.
  • Promote breastfeeding and ensure appropriate materials and documentation; schedule infant feeding classes; coordinate with lactation staff for follow-ups.
  • Complete and submit EARs and People First timesheets by deadlines; ensure accuracy of time and documents before supervisor submission.
  • Represent DOH-Seminole WIC Program in outreach events; participate in nutrition and breastfeeding education activities and trainings; assist with staff training.
  • May perform duty coverage such as lab tasks in the absence of Health Support Technician; enter demographic data, issue EBT benefits and schedule appointments; perform other duties as needed to support the department’s mission.
Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: nutrition science, treatment techniques, chemistry, biochemistry, statistics, research methods; understanding of preventative health care in public health; communication and counseling skills.

Skills:

time management, computers with Windows and Microsoft Office. Abilities: conduct nutritional assessments, develop care plans, work independently and in teams, manage fast-paced clinic environments, multitask, prioritize, solve problems, communicate effectively in writing and speaking, interpret nutrition materials, and apply applicable rules and procedures.

Minimum:

  • Do you hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Dietetics, Clinical Nutrition, Nutritional Science, Community Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, or Public Health Nutrition?

Preferred:

  • Verifiable work experience conducting nutritional assessments.
  • Verifiable work experience providing nutrition education to clients individually or in groups.
  • Verifiable experience preparing and delivering educational presentations to groups.
