About the role

This role is in Golden Bay. Reporting into the Skipper, the Senior Deckhand, will assist the skipper with training and giving direction to the work being carried out on deck. You will carry out duties and operations ensuring the supply of mussels to the Havelock Processing Plant for sale and distribution.

Responsibilities:

About you:

You should have hands-on experience with tasks like line handling, equipment operation, and basic maintenance. Knowledge of mussel harvesting techniques is a plus, as is the ability to work efficiently in a team and under various weather conditions. Attention to safety and an understanding of maritime protocols are essential.

Strong communication skills, reliability, and physical stamina are key, as the work is often physically demanding. Flexibility and a proactive attitude will help you succeed in this role.

  • Ability to lead a crew, make decisions in challenging weather conditions, and manage the responsibilities of the vessel and farm operations
  • Thorough understanding of maritime safety, local fishing and farming regulations, and environmental standards
  • Familiarity with mussel farming techniques, from seeding and harvesting (preferred but not essential)
  • Resourceful and able to make quick decisions in adverse conditions, including troubleshooting equipment or adapting plans due to weather changes
