Job Description

Security Shift Supervisor at Seminole State College of Florida is responsible for leading security personnel, ensuring compliance with college policies, preventing and mitigating crime through patrols, surveillance, traffic education, and incident investigations.

Essential Functions
  • Responds to medical, criminal, and mechanical emergencies using Incident Command System/National Incident Management System (ICS/NIMS).
  • Investigates incidents, interviews participants, completes reports, complies with the Jeanne Clery Act, and collaborates with law enforcement.
  • Conducts security audits, inspections, and site surveys to identify risks and implement mitigation processes.
  • Patrols campus properties to ensure a safe environment using crime‑prevention techniques.
  • Provides traffic education, enforcement, and management to prevent accidents.
  • Supervises school and community activities and events with department leadership and staff.
  • Supervises daily safety and security operations on campus.
  • Acts as the on‑call person for security issues requiring supervisor or higher attention.
  • Supervises direct reports, including orientation, scheduling, coaching, mentoring, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Performs quality assurance of security operations and determines remedial training needs.
  • Generates staffing schedules and deploys shift personnel to meet operational objectives.
  • Oversees field training of new hires.
  • Provides courteous customer service to college personnel, students, and visitors and records complaints.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop short‑ and long‑term goals, updating annually.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Five years of experience in public safety (e.g., police officer, firefighter, EMS) or as a security officer/guard.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license or a valid license from another state that can be converted within 30 days of employment, with an acceptable driving record.
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid/AED; if not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Security or related training certificate that meets or exceeds Florida Statute 493 Class D License requirements; certificate must be kept current.
Desired Qualifications
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Completion of certificate or college coursework toward a degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
Special Requirements
  • In‑residence telephone service or cell phone.
  • Dependable transportation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of security operations, policies, regulations, and laws affecting campus property.
  • Ability to enforce regulations consistently.
  • Ability to describe people and objects in accurate detail.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to compose concise reports in Microsoft Word and incident‑reporting software.
  • Professional, courteous demeanor and effective interaction with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and critical‑thinking skills for quick decision making in emergencies.

Physical Ability Assessment

Final hire is contingent upon successful completion of a job‑related physical ability assessment. Current employees may be referred for assessment or reassessment upon supervisor recommendation and HR approval.

Work Environment And Special Considerations
  • Primarily outdoors; exposed to sun and weather conditions.
  • Various work locations and hours including overnights, evenings, weekends, and emergency call‑backs.
  • Must run when necessary and maneuver in small spaces.
  • Must lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective aid) and color discrimination.
  • Must walk or remain stationary for long periods and climb stairs regularly.
  • Proper dress code while on duty.
  • Required to operate college vehicles.
