DEFINITION

Under supervision, performs assignments restricted to non‑enforcement police‑related functions and performs all related learning and testing activities relative to technical knowledge, skills and physical abilities to perform in the capacity of a sworn police officer. Receives supervision from a sworn police officer. This class does not exercise supervision. This position is a temporary at‑will position.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Police Cadet is a non‑sworn trainee level class in the Police Department in which incumbents perform non‑enforcement duties such as traffic and parking control, non‑injury traffic collision investigations, assisting with duties associated with the booking and storage of property and evidence, assist in public events, crime prevention efforts and related paperwork. Work may also include various non‑sworn administrative duties in support of police activities and are responsible for providing assistance in support of police staff in a variety of areas.

Incumbents may be assigned to work various hours as necessary to include nights, weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Possession of a High School diploma or GED equivalent, and be at least 20 years of age.

Special Requirements
  • Police Cadet position is designed to prepare the incumbent for a career in law enforcement.
  • Must enroll in an accredited California Law Enforcement Basic Academy approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training within 18 months of appointment.
  • Must complete the accredited California Law Enforcement Basic Academy within 24 months from appointment. Employees who fail to meet these requirements may be released from employment.
  • Failure to demonstrate the ability to become a police officer may result in termination. No employee may gain permanent status as a Police Cadet.
  • Pursuant to P.O.S.T. requirements, must be a citizen of the United States or permanent resident alien who is eligible, and has applied, for citizenship.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must successfully complete a polygraph test, and extensive background investigation, psychological examination, and a medical examination prior to appointment.
  • Bilingual abilities preferred.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Attend a California Law Enforcement Basic Academy approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and successfully complete the training programs required for graduation.
  • Participation in a variety of activities in administering non‑sworn police services and programs for the police department in preparation for or during the police academy.
  • Assist police officers with non‑enforcement duties; complete routine police reports, assist code enforcement officers as requested.
  • Assist Police Officers in a non‑enforcement capacity, direct and control traffic, and provide parking and facility access control.
  • Direct and control traffic at collision scenes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
