Responsibilities
  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.
Duty locations and incentives

You will be asked to provide your preference for one of the following mission-critical locations. The listed locations are expected to have vacancies in the future; however, if a duty location does not have vacancies at the time of your final offer, you may be offered a duty location elsewhere in the United States. Duty location incentives may apply as described below.

Salary and benefits:
Annual base salary and locality pay vary by duty location. A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary. This is a career ladder position with a grade progression from GS-5 to GS-12, with promotions to the next grade level after 52 weeks in each grade. Location incentives, overtime, and benefits are described below.

  • GS-5 and GS-7: $40,332 - $109,952 per year (base salary).
  • Locality pay varies by duty location.
  • Benefits include health and dental insurance, annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.
  • Past the starting salary, you may be eligible for additional incentive payments based on duty location and overtime.

Location incentives:
If you accept one of the duty locations listed, you may be eligible to receive an additional 15%–25% of your salary each year for the first three years, and 25% for San Francisco for four years. Detailed duty-location incentives are outlined in the announcement.

Qualifications

GS-5 qualifications

You qualify for the GS-5 grade level if you possess one of the following:

  • Experience:

    A minimum of three years of full-time general work experience demonstrating the ability to interact with people and learn and apply a body of facts; OR
  • Education substitution: A bachelor’s degree or successful completion of a full four-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; OR
  • Combination of experience and education: A combination of college education and general work experience. This will be calculated from your resume and transcripts submitted with your application.
GS-7 qualifications

You qualify for the GS-7 grade level if you possess one of the following:

  • Experience:

    One year of specialized full-time work experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level that includes performing physical inspections, evaluating facts, and applying laws and regulations.
  • Education substitution: A bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (class standing, GPA 3.0+, or honor society) or one year of graduate-level education.
  • Combination of experience and education: A combination of specialized work experience and graduate education.
