Department Marketing Statement

The Vernon and Mary Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration is a center under the Office of Research. The Cheadle Center fulfills the University's mission of education, research, and outreach through its stewardship and restoration of campus lands, and preservation and management of natural history collections. The Cheadle Center promotes teaching diverse undergraduate courses in EEMB, Environmental Studies, and Geology.

It supports faculty, staff, and student research interests by providing field and lab-based resources. In addition, the Cheadle Center houses regionally focused collections of terrestrial plants, algae, and vertebrates, as well as an extensive plant anatomy collection. The Center satisfies the University's obligation to provide stewardship of campus lands, rich in biodiversity. Through the ecological restoration program, the Center encourages land restoration on and near campus.

The Kids in Nature outreach program fulfills K-12 educational goals, while staff and faculty curators provide scientific information and advice to private entities.

Brief Summary of

Job Duties

Under close supervision by the Project Manager and Restoration Coordinator, the Restoration Ecology Assistant will assist with a broad array of activities for the implementation and maintenance of NCOS restoration project and other Cheadle Center restoration project sites as needed. Responsibilities include a wide variety of field activities related to habitat restoration including: assisting with leading student interns and volunteer work forces;

invasive weed control by various methods; native plant installation and seed collection; site preparation activities; assisting with plant propagation at the restoration nursery and greenhouse; and other duties related to monitoring and education/outreach. All tasks are frequently reviewed for quality and completeness.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 1-3 years:
    Prefer applicants with experience in ecological restoration with knowledge of native and non-native plants and invasive species management skills. A positive attitude and strong work ethic are important, as are leadership and mentorship skills.
Special Conditions of Employment
  • Satisfactory criminal history/background check
  • Must maintain valid CA DL, a satisfactory DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program
