Part‑Time Martial Arts Instructor (Pool)
Join Mission College as an associate‑faculty pool instructor teaching martial arts courses such as Tai Chi, Self Defense, Karate and Aikido. The role is part‑time, flexible, and may involve lecture‑discussion, on‑line, or distance‑education formats during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.
Position SummaryPart‑time associate faculty position in the Martial Arts program. The instructor will prepare and deliver coursework, maintain accurate records, and provide guidance to diverse student populations. This pool role is represented by the West Valley‑Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT), AFT 6554.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in‑class or on‑line/distance activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation outside of class, and currency maintenance in the subjects taught.
- Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
- Submit attendance rosters and grade reports on time.
- Follow course outlines filed in the instruction offices.
- Maintain weekly office hours (.5 hour per week per section).
- Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
- Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
- Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
- Work cooperatively within the college community.
- Foster an environment that protects academic freedom, is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias, and demonstrates respect for each individual’s dignity.
Education:
Any bachelor’s degree and two years of related professional experience or any associate degree and six years of related professional experience.
AND
Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
- Teaching experience in a community college, particularly in Tai Chi, Self Defense, Karate or Aikido.
- Complete the online West Valley‑Mission Community College District application.
- Submit a resume, unofficial copies of transcripts (or official equivalents for foreign degrees), and any required licenses or certificates.
- Include supervisor(s) name(s) and telephone numbers.
- All sections of the online application, including Education and Educational Work History, must be completed.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Do NOT send unrequested materials; they will be removed from your application.
- The application and supporting documents represent you; fill them out carefully and completely.
- If a degree is required, submit transcripts verifying the degree awarded, including the conferred date.
- Degrees must be from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Council on Post‑Secondary Accreditation and/or the U.S. Department of Education.
- Foreign‑earned degrees require official U.S. credential evaluation and documentation; no certificates or paid equivalents are accepted.
- Do not submit encrypted, password‑protected or otherwise inaccessible files.
- Applications will be screened by department representatives; qualified applicants will be invited to interview.
- Travel expenses to attend the interview are the responsibility of the candidate.
- Application materials remain in the online system for 1 year and may be refreshed annually for pool re‑application.
- Application materials become the District’s property and will not be returned.
- Upon hire, successful candidates must provide required documents of identity and authorization to work in the United States. The District does not provide visa sponsorship.
