Position Overview

Position title: Pre‑six College 1 Lecturer

Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach the standard five‑credit course is $8,531 – $14,523 (based on salary points 1‑19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non‑senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre‑six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).

Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned (one standard, five‑credit course is 37.5%)

Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2025 through spring quarter 2026. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.

Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to teach sections of College 1, a graduation requirement for all incoming first‑year students. College 1 is a seminar course designed to help first‑year students develop academic and civic proficiency while building a sense of belonging at their residential colleges. Students will develop proficiencies in critical thinking and communication skills through active and collaborative learning with peers.

This course prepares students for success in all other UCSC courses.

College 1 instructors typically meet with a seminar of 25‑30 students two or three times per week and teach material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

• Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in a field related to the above‑mentioned focuses of the colleges.
• Demonstrated record of achievement in teaching critical and analytical reading and thinking.
• Demonstrated experience facilitating high‑impact educational practices including first‑year seminars or experiences, collaborative assignments or projects, common intellectual experiences, and/or undergraduate research.
• Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated understanding of the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education.
