Position description

Crown College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach the enhancement course Crown 70
- Introduction to Broadcast Media:
Radio. Crown s enhancement courses promote innovation and the development of transferable skills through work in areas such as start-ups, social or creative entrepreneurship, computational modeling, and digital communication. Crown 70 is the training course for KZSC, a student-run community radio station broadcasting at 88.1 FM in Santa Cruz.

Students in Crown 70 have volunteered at the radio station for at least one quarter prior to enrolling. The course concludes the students  training and qualifies them to serve as staff members at the station and host their own shows: fulfilling KZSC s educational and community service mission by providing professional-level communications and production skills, creative flair, and significant educational impact.

The Crown 70 lecturer is assisted in the classroom by KZSC s student leaders who are Crown 70 graduates and work at the radio station. In their positions at KZSC, student leaders work with minimal supervision and are assigned significant responsibility. By assisting in the classroom, the lecturer is able to instruct student leaders on how to deliver hands-on, student-centered instruction and to familiarize them on how participants are socialized to work in a mission-driven all-volunteer non-profit organization.

The Crown 70 lecturer meets with a maximum of twenty students once a week to facilitate student-centered classroom learning activities and present materials from an established syllabus (which the lecturer is encouraged to enhance in collaboration with the KZSC student leadership). The course also provides mentorships (that are overseen by the lecturer) between experienced KZSC programmers and the students, which provide students with hands-on learning about equipment, software, and station policies.

Selected candidates will demonstrate expertise in one or several professional fields related to the content of the class, including but certainly not limited to communications, journalism, music and cultural programming/events, creative writing (fiction or non-fiction), film and television, non-profit management and entrepreneurship (in the arts, education, humanities, community-building, media), experiential education, community studies, and/or documentary work.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • College or public radio/television experience.
  • Nonprofit development and/or leadership experience.
  • Record of creative and/or research activity in a relevant field such as communications, journalism, music and cultural programming/events, creative writing (fiction or non-fiction), film and television, or non-profit management and entrepreneurship (in the arts, education, humanities, community-building, or…
