Department OverviewThe Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) provide programs to improve retention and academic success of first-generation, low-income, and historically underserved students. This position focuses on serving students in the EOP Wellness Program and collaborating with campus departments to implement wellness activities. EOP resides within the Division of Student Affairs and Success at UC Santa Cruz.
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio supports campus-wide student success services, advising, programming, and retention initiatives. SSE includes multiple units and operates across 8 facilities/locations with over 17,000 students and 64 career employees plus 475 student staff. Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the EOP Director and supervision of an EOP Assistant Director, the EOP Academic Counselor provides direct services to EOP students and leads one of the following initiatives:
Undocumented Students Services (USS), First-Gen, or Wellness. The incumbent will focus on student counseling, retention, and graduation, and collaborate with campus partners to support student success. The counselor will supervise student staff and participate in professional development.
- Budgeted Salary: $76,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

- Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines to at-risk populations (low-income, first-generation, undocumented, underrepresented, pell-eligible).
- Plans and provides programming, advising, support services, wellness, and referrals for EOP students.
- Collaborates with campus partners to create a welcoming environment that supports academic success and retention.
- Maintains partnerships with student service and academic units to resolve complex student issues (financial aid, housing, advising, health care, etc.).
- Analyzes student issues and provides solutions and alternatives.
- Helps students develop strategies to solve academic and personal problems; advises students and implements retention programs.
- Escalates cases to appropriate offices and engages with colleagues to advocate for students.
- Meets with students individually and in groups to provide support, coaching, and counseling on academic planning and campus life.
