Controls Engineer

Controls Engineer role at The Home Depot is a critical position for designing, developing, and implementing advanced control systems for warehouse and logistics automation.

Base Pay Range

$80,000.00/yr - $/yr

Position Purpose

The Controls Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced control systems for high-performance warehouse and logistics automation environments. This role is responsible for executing and supporting Ignition SCADA-based control solutions that integrate with PLCs, WCS platforms, and material handling systems across multiple sites.

The Controls Engineer will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams—including design, operations, and commissioning—to ensure seamless system integration, optimal performance, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

The ideal candidate brings hands‑on experience developing and deploying Ignition (SCADA) systems, strong proficiency in PLC programming (Allen Bradley / Siemens), and a solid foundation in electrical or computer engineering.

This position requires geographic mobility, with current projects based in Pennsylvania and New Mexico
, supporting upcoming site go‑lives and installation efforts.

The Controls Engineer will contribute to the broader automation strategy by driving innovation, reliability, and scalability across our growing fulfillment network.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Implementation (50%):
    Lead or assist in control systems design projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications and safety regulations.
  • Collaboration (30%):
    Work closely with operations, maintenance, and IT to ensure seamless project execution and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Coding of Control Systems (20%):
    Program control systems for conveyor and automation solutions to improve efficiency and performance; also conduct feasibility studies and cost analysis for potential projects.
Direct Manager/Direct Reports

Reports to Manager or Senior Manager, Controls Engineering. No direct reports.

Travel Requirements

Typically overnight travel required 50% of the time.

Physical Requirements

Must continuously stand or walk and regularly lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight (8-20 lbs).

Working Conditions

Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. May be exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes, odors, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • Ability to work overnight shift and/or weekends on occasion.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
  • Project management skills.
  • Effective communication of complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • 4+ years of experience in controls engineering, focusing on automation and conveyor systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of PLCs, SCADA systems, and other control technologies.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations (OSHA, ISO).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proven technical experience implementing conveyor systems or replacing legacy conveyor systems in large‑scale retail, distribution, or enterprise environments.
Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree in a related field.

Experience

Minimum Years: 2;
Preferred Years: 4.

Leadership Experience

No previous leadership experience required.
