Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, the Intern Pharmacist supports the pharmacy department in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). This position offers exposure to ambulatory care pharmacy practice, 340B program operations, and pharmacy business development initiatives while serving a diverse patient population.
The intern will assist with both clinical and operational pharmacy activities under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, and will contribute to departmental projects focused on pharmacy operations, quality improvement, and patient education that support the organization’s mission and strategic goals.
Continued enrollment in an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program and maintenance of an active New Mexico Board of Pharmacy (NMBOP) intern license are required for employment.
Essential Responsibilities- Patient Care and Clinical Support (under direct pharmacist supervision): assist in dispensing and preparing medications in accordance with federal and state regulations; support patient counseling and education related to medication use, adherence, and chronic disease management; provide immunizations under pharmacist supervision; participate in medication therapy management (MTM), medication reconciliation, and refill authorization workflows; collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support transitions of care and optimize medication access.
- Operational and Administrative Support: assist with 340B program compliance, including documentation, inventory, and audit preparation; support daily pharmacy operations such as order processing, stock management, and prescription workflow; contribute to improving pharmacy efficiency, safety, and quality of care through data collection and process improvement initiatives.
- Project-Based Work: participate in independent and collaborative projects related to pharmacy business and financial planning, operations, clinical pharmacy service development, patient and staff education initiatives, and quality assurance; complete assigned deliverables by agreed deadlines with minimal supervision while maintaining academic balance.
- Active New Mexico Board of Pharmacy Intern License in good standing.
- Enrollment and good academic standing in an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
- Completion of ACPE-approved immunization training and authorization to immunize.
- Basic understanding of ambulatory care pharmacy principles and workflows.
- Commitment to serving diverse and underserved patient populations.
- Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
- Familiarity with the 340B Drug Pricing Program and related compliance standards.
- Experience in a community, outpatient, or health center pharmacy environment.
- Fluent in English, required. Fluent in Spanish, preferred.
