The Human Resources Director is responsible for the management of all HR functions, services, policies, and programs supporting the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA). The HR Director performs at a senior level and is a subject‑matter expert on a wide range of HR and organizational issues.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Manage, direct, and oversee the HR department’s budget, staff, and services.
  • Prepare, monitor, and manage the HR budget.
  • Hire, train, supervise, coach, and motivate HR staff and IAIA staff as needed.
  • Implement HR strategies covering talent acquisition, staffing, employment processing, compensation, health and welfare benefits, training, records management, employee relations, retention, and EEO compliance.
  • Lead all HR key functions: security, records management, onboarding, performance management, compensation, benefits administration.
  • Recruit and staff talent in collaboration with hiring departments.
  • Work closely with supervisors to create and update job descriptions and perform job analysis as required.
  • Implement IAIA’s onboarding and orientation process.
  • Assist or collaborate with management in staff development and training.
  • Monitor, track, and report on staff compensation issues and internal equity.
  • Oversee administration of IAIA’s benefit programs and conduct negotiations with medical benefits carriers as required.
  • Review, formulate, recommend, and implement HR policies, procedures, and programs in collaboration with the VPO and relevant committees.
  • Accomplish special projects by identifying issues and priorities, communicating and coordinating requirements, evaluating milestones, and adjusting direction.
  • Provide HR advice, counsel, and decisions to support management, analyze legal factors, and apply precedent.
  • Research, develop, write, and update policies and procedures, communicating IAIA’s core values.
  • Participate in Strategic Workforce Planning, including succession planning and organizational management.
  • Manage HRIS to ensure data integrity and collaborate with IT on system upgrades.
  • Support IAIA’s mission and commitment to Native preference in hiring.
  • Develop supervisory leadership training on performance management, corrective action, and compliance.
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze compensation structures and market comparisons.
  • Track relevant HR metrics (turnover, time‑to‑hire, vacancy rates), conduct exit interviews, and report findings.
  • Serve as HR lead for emergency preparedness and crisis response.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws: ADA, background checks, COBRA, EEO, FLSA, FMLA, FECA, retention guidelines, New Mexico unemployment insurance, sexual harassment, wage and hour guidelines, whistle blower, and retaliation protection.
  • Maintain job knowledge through conferences, education, publications, networks, and professional organizations.
  • Own challenging requests and explore opportunities to add value.
  • Provide clear employee communications on HR topics.
  • Lead HR practices that foster an employee‑oriented culture emphasizing quality, best practices, approachability, and strategic goal achievement.
