Aquatic Monitoring Field Crew Lead Member
Join American Conservation Experience (ACE) to apply for the Aquatic Monitoring Field Crew Lead Member role. One technician will work on a 2‑person field team (crew leader and crew member) and collect data per the New Mexico BLM Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) methodologies. The data support resource specialists and land managers across the Western U.S.

Position OverviewThis is a field‑based position; approximately 100% of the work is in the outdoors. Field teams work 10‑hour days, camp for 8 days, then have 6 days off. Travel between Santa Fe and field sites is provided.
Field Work Duties- Monitor crew safety and morale
- Measure water quality indicators (pH, specific conductance, total N and P, turbidity)
- Sample benthic macroinvertebrates
- Measure physical characteristics of waterways
- Use GPS to navigate to off‑trail sampling sites
- Drive 4×4 vehicles in backcountry
- Collect electronic data via tablet and ArcGIS database
- Communicate with ACE and BLM staff
- Perform quality control of all collected data
8‑day camping in the field followed by 6 days off. Work 10‑hour days.
Position Benefits- Living allowance: $825 /week, dispensed bi‑weekly for food and incidental expenses.
- Housing assistance: reimbursable up to $200 /week for approved housing expenses.
- Relocation assistance: up to $850 / week for eligible relocation expenses.
- Gear assistance: up to $200 / week to purchase approved gear.
ACE provides orientation and BLM provides comprehensive training in Aquatic AIM methods.
Qualifications- Authorized to work in the U.S.; no visa sponsorship.
- Professional, positive, and enthusiastic representation of ACE.
- Self‑directed, able to work alone or in a team.
- Valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, age 21+.
- Must pass required criminal background checks.
- Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Completion of bi‑weekly timesheets, feedback forms, evaluations.
- Ability to hike up to 3 mi and lift up to 50 lb daily.
- Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles and field safety.
- Flexible to irregular schedule with travel; ability to work alone or in a small group with minimal supervision.
- Degree in natural or physical sciences or related field.
- Local candidates strongly considered.
- Understanding of basic hydrologic principles.
- Experience measuring water quality indicators in the field.
- GPS navigation with maps.
- Electronic tablet data collection.
- Safe operation of 4×4 vehicles on rough roads.
- Willingness to undergo federal background check.
- Clear communication with team, professionals, public.
- Basic tool, equipment, vehicle maintenance.
- Physical demands: frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking (up to 8 days), carrying equipment, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, crouching.
- Vision: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception; focus.
- Weight lifted: up to 50 lb.
- Environment: outdoor/indoor; variable weather; hazardous terrain.
- Travel: regular domestic travel.
Personal protective equipment provided; mandatory use per BLM/ACE protocols. Safe vehicle operation and equipment training required.
