* * Position Summary
** Performs lifeguarding duties at the Fitness Education Center swimming pools. Must be committed to serving a diverse college community. Actively participates in and contributes to continuous quality improvement. SFCC has 10, 20 and 30 hour Lifeguard positions, depending on availability.
** Duties & Responsibilities
*** Maintains alert surveillance of swimmers in pool and on deck.
* Observes the behavior of swimmers for safe and unsafe actions.
* Recognizes distressed or drowning situations and responds quickly with correct actions.
* Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
* Rotates surveillance shifts at lifeguard chair every 20 minutes to maintain alert and constant surveillance.
* Reports Accidents.
* Performs daily inspections of all pool equipment and keeps pool, pool deck, pool equipment, storage rooms, and pool office in a clean and orderly state.
* Maintains constant communication with other lifeguards during workshift regarding emergency and non-emergency situations.
* Responds to requests and questions of all swimmers educates and infoorms them of pool policies for their safety
* Makes recommendations regarding pool closures due to unsafe conditions; may close the pool if conditions warrant such action.
* Participates in monthly and quarterly in-service training programs.
* Assists instructors with aquatic facility set up and the supervision of classes.
* Performs related duties as assigned.
** Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
*
* * Knowledge of pool safety guidelines.
* Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures
* Knowledge of water rescue techniques.
* Knowledge of pool maintenance and safe operation standards.
* Knowledge of safe exercise guidelines and the use of exercise equipment in the aquatic environment.
* Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques (active victim, passive and submerged victim rescue).
* Skill in the completion of reports.
* Skill in oral and written communication.
* Skill in the use of aquatic equipment, including chair lift, backboards, vacuum, power washer, microphone systems, swim bench, and various pool swim devices.
* Ability to demonstrate the following swim and rescue skills:
* Swim 150 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
* Tread water for two (2) minutes using only the legs.
* Continue to swim 50 yards.
* Complete a timed event within one (1) minute, 40 seconds.
* Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
* Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object; return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
* Perform single and two-person CPR with a pocket mask and bag valve mask(BVM), and have the ability to perform rescue breathing and/or CPR continuously until EMS personnel arrive to take over and assist.
* Perform spinal in-line stabilization: shallow water head-splint and deep water in-line stabilization with rescue tube towing from the deep end to the shallow end of the pool area.
* Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
* Ability to exhibit professionalism, tact and patience when communicating with students, staff, faculty and the general public.
** Physical Demands
*** The work is typically performed sitting, intermittently standing, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally climbs ladders.
* The work is typically performed at swimming facility.
* Ability to lift and/or carry 45 pounds and assist with lifting up to 250 pounds and bring them onto the deck.
* Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
* Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment.
* Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illnesses).
