Deputy Sheriff II - Court Security - Extra-Help

Starting salary up to $65.46/hour* (Salary is negotiable within the established range. Benefits described herein do not represent a contract and may be changed without notice.)

Position Information
We are recruiting multiple intermittent, Extra‑Help Deputies to provide law enforcement security for the Sonoma County Courts. Candidates with English/Spanish bilingual skills and out‑of‑state applicants are encouraged to apply. Out‑of‑state applicants must obtain a California POST Basic Course Waiver (BCW).

Extra‑Help Employment
Extra‑Help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Intermittent, extra‑help employees are not in the classified civil service, do not receive most regular employee benefits, and are limited to a maximum of 1,380 hours in any 12‑month consecutive period. Eligible employees may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High‑school graduation or acceptable GED certificate.
  • One year of recent, full‑time paid experience as a law‑enforcement officer with a city, county, state or federal police agency.
  • Possession of a POST Basic certificate.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • No felony convictions or ongoing probation in any state or federal jurisdiction.
  • Permanent‑resident aliens must apply for citizenship at least one year before application or risk disqualification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of laws, ordinances, and court procedures, modern crime detection and investigation methods, and general police practices.
  • Knowledge of first aid methods, geography and topography of Sonoma County.
  • Ability to enforce the law firmly, tactfully and impartially, to engage courteously with the public, to make quick effective decisions in emergencies, understand and follow written and oral directions, and speak and write effectively.

Selection Procedure

  • Initial appraisal:
    Application and supplemental questionnaire review.
  • Second phase:
    Written or oral examination of educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Background investigation:
    Verification of employment, education, court reports, public records, drug test, polygraph, medical and physical examination. Process may take 3‑5 months.
  • Final hiring decision:
    Candidates placed on employment list and referred for potentially relevant positions.
