About Us

Formerly Aurora Santa Rosa Hospital, SRBHH opened in 2016 and is part of the greater Santa Rosa and Northern California mental health system. Conveniently located in the North Bay, the hospital has 144 acute psychiatric inpatient beds and serves adolescents and adults with mental health and co‑occurring psychiatric and substance abuse conditions.

Description of Position

The Inpatient Psychiatric RN’s top priority is delivering high‑quality, safe care to psychiatric inpatients in the acute locked hospital facility. The RN provides direct care and treatment, coordinates care from other nursing personnel, plans and coordinates each patient’s individual nursing care plan, and implements nursing aspects of the multidisciplinary treatment plan (MDTP). The RN embraces SRBHH’s mission, vision, and values, adheres to hospital policies and procedures, and understands regulations and standards governing acute psychiatric hospital services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess inpatient needs, nursing staff resources and complete inpatient/unit assignments based on acuity, treatment plan goals, and unit operations.
  • Assess all inpatients’ status; provide direct care, document patient care and assessments, prepare and administer medications, and ensure documentation is completed at shift’s end.
  • Provide clinical summary information to team members at treatment team meetings, shift reports, and hand‑offs; provide continual oversight of all inpatients and unit operations.
  • Work with nursing and other clinical staff to plan and document patient care; document care plans on the MDTP, including inpatient problems, hospitalization goals, and short‑term goals.
  • Provide patient care by demonstrating knowledge of mental health diagnoses, standards of care, evidence‑based practice, medications, high risks for mental health patients, National Patient Safety Goals, and care models.
  • Apply nursing process and process improvement principles at all organizational levels.
  • Identify staffing needs based on staffing plan and acuity assessments.
  • Provide direct clinical oversight to other nursing staff throughout the shift in conjunction with the Nurse Manager, RN House Supervisor or Director of Nursing.
  • Coordinate team members’ immediate response during psychiatric crises and provide effective leadership at all times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Current California RN license.
  • Current CPR certification, or obtained within orientation period.
  • Verbal de‑escalation and physical intervention programming approved by CNO.
  • Knowledge and experience of psychiatric diagnosis, associated risks, medications, biological systems, nursing process, treatment planning, inpatient unit operations, and leadership.
  • English proficiency.
Skills & Competencies

The RN will pass initial and annual competency evaluations, including suicide prevention, restraint use, de‑escalation, medication knowledge, code blue/emergency interventions, infection prevention, and appropriate use of seclusion and restraints. The RN will demonstrate skill in applying knowledge and competency in daily nursing practice.

Physical Requirements
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained periods.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from lower to higher or horizontally.
  • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with fingertips.
  • Express or exchange ideas orally, potentially loudly, accurately or quickly.
  • Perceive sound with no less than 40 db loss @1000 Hz and 2000 Hz.
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Provide manual and mechanical restraints for patients who are physically acting out.
  • Visual acuity within minimum standards with or without correction.
  • Work may involve temperature changes but primarily indoors.
