The Department of Health Services, Public Health Division is recruiting to fill a Public Health Nurse I position. The position requires a California State Public Health Nursing Certificate. Through on‑the‑job training and experience, a Public Health Nurse I can gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be promoted to a Public Health Nurse II.

About the Position

The Division is seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) Public Health Nurse I to join its Nurse‑Family Partnership (NFP) Home Visiting Program. NFP is an evidence‑based nurse home‑visiting program that empowers first‑time pregnant parents to transform their lives and create better futures for themselves and their babies. Nurses partner with clients during the first or second trimester of pregnancy and conduct home visits available to the family until the child’s second birthday.

Clients learn about pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, child development, and nutrition. Nurses support families to improve their health, education, and economic self‑sufficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct visits in clients’ homes or at other agreed‑upon locations (e.g., parks, libraries), typically checking in with multiple families per day and collaborating with families to develop and follow individualized action plans.
  • Conduct routine comprehensive assessments.
  • Actively coordinate and follow up on referrals to other health and social service providers and work with local agencies and community organizations to meet clients’ needs.
  • Deliver culturally responsive health and parenting education.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and up‑to‑date records of all client interactions, assessments, action plans, and referrals.
  • Attend team meetings and training sessions, and participate in regular outreach activities.
  • Conduct outreach with referral sources to identify new clients (e.g., attending weekly NICU rounds at area hospitals) who could benefit from home visiting services.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Fluent bilingual skills (English/Spanish) and knowledge of public health and population health practices.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with maternal‑child nursing.
  • Experience working in community, clinic, and public health settings.
  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed practices and experience working with individuals impacted by substance use, homelessness, mental health challenges, and intergenerational trauma.
  • The ability to work independently and in close collaboration with a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Previous experience as a Nurse Home Visitor, Public Health Nurse, or similar.
  • An interest in fieldwork and the ability to work with families with diverse household customs and traditions.
  • The ability to demonstrate and genuinely convey respect and appreciation for a client’s strengths to build a positive relationship.
  • Openness to continual learning.

Public Health Nurse will work Monday‑Friday daytime hours, with occasional need to flex hours or meet families outdoors. A driver’s license is required for the position, as the role involves field visits.
