Position: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Non-Safety

PART TIME - NON-BENEFITED POSITIONS = $20.86 HOURLY RATE
FULL TIME - BENEFITED POSITIONS = $20.86 HOURLY RATE


EMT Full-time employees:

  • May be assigned 12 or 24-hour shift schedules working on BLS and ALS ambulances.
  • Will be subject to mandatory overtime as needed to ensure the continuous staffing of the Fire Department's ALS ambulances.

Under the general direction of a Fire Captain, EMTs respond to medical emergencies and other emergency and non-emergency situations; participate in training, prevention, inspection, education, and related activities to protect life and property; perform fire station and equipment maintenance; serve in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provide information and assistance to the public; and perform other related duties as required. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Safely responding to fire, medical, and other emergency calls with an emergency response team;
  • Perform emergency medical patient assessment and treatment as indicated and necessary in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Treatment Protocol/Policies for EMT level care;
  • Provide emergency medical care as needed on ALS fire companies and on the ALS ambulance, and assist in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies;
  • Maintain records and prepare written reports;
  • Obtain the required certifications to drive and operate staff vehicles and ambulances as required;
  • Assist in the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, fire station, and grounds;
  • Attend drills, training and conferences;
  • Learn fire department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and techniques;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

All candidates for this classification must meet the following:

  • 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess valid California EMT-B certification with accreditation in San Diego County at the time of hire, which must be maintained for the duration of their assignment
  • Possess a CA Class C Driver’s License
  • Ambulance driver’s certificate at time of hire
  • AHA, BLS, CPR certification or equivalent


Highly Desirable Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications identified above, the following are considered highly desirable for this position, but not required:

  • Minimum three-months paid work experience as an EMT on an ambulance or first responder assessment company
  • Employment experience working as an EMT on a Santee-Lakeside Emergency Medical Services (SLEMSA) transport unit
  • Any combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates a professional desire to work as a firefighter / paramedic
  • Completion of a paramedic preparatory class through a recognized paramedic training program
  • Certification as a paramedic


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of safe working practices and procedures; knowledge of San Diego County pre-hospital EMT policy, procedures and protocols; ability to appropriately document workplace activities using computers and electronic devices; knowledge of basic mathematics; knowledge of emergency medical treatment and CPR techniques; ability to follow orders and directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, emergency medical patients, hospital staff, the public and members of other agencies;

ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to interpret and make effective decisions by correctly applying policies, procedures and technical knowledge in an emergency; ability to work independently; ability to work in stressful conditions; ability to safely operate vehicles; ability to manage multiple patient medical scenes; ability to physically perform the full range of duties of this classification.
