SCC Shelter Nurse- PRN

Description

PRN (as needed) nursing position for the Provider, in the State of Florida. All nurses contracted to render services shall be continuously licensed, certified, or registered as required by law, policy, and the Department of Health, in their respective areas of expertise.

• Documentation of youths’ healthcare status upon admission, including reviewing the Health Admission Screening form provided by facility intake staff.
• Conduct nursing assessments as indicated by intake documentation and develop a nursing care plan for youths with medical conditions, including all known medical/dental appointments, current medications, and community practitioners.
• Complete appropriate Medical Alerts (including nutrition and diet concerns).
• Provide episodic and emergency care on site. Refer youth requiring care beyond First Aid to Emergency Room or EMS/911. When the nurse is not on-site, non-licensed staff follow standard policy governing medical and mental health concerns; the nurse is not on-call.
• Provide health education for youths and parents/guardians on medications and chronic/acute health conditions, including wellness, fitness, nutrition, and coping skills.
• Manage Medication Process: oversight of distribution, secure storage, and accountability; supervise medication administration on-site; train non-licensed staff to assist youth with self-administration during hours when no licensed nurse is on-site; ensure training and competency verification cannot be delegated to other non-licensed staff.
• Verify youths’ medications brought to the shelter by communicating with the youths’ community pharmacy, medical provider, and parent/guardian.
• Manage Pyxis medication storage system and inventory counts; on-site nurse administers medications to youth; when off-site, non-licensed trained staff handle delivery.
• Monitor Medication Distribution Logs (MDL) to ensure prescribed medications are provided.
• Reorder over-the-counter medications and first aid supplies.
• Monitor medication side effects and provide additional training to staff as needed; conduct Root Cause Analysis of medication errors or omissions.
• Develop and implement universal precautions and infection control standards; educate youth and staff on infection control.
• Educate staff on acute and chronic health conditions, wellness, nutrition, and universal precautions/infection control.
• Review and evaluate medical CCC incidents; make corrective action recommendations to address deficiencies.
• Evaluate CCC reporting information from Care Fusion Knowledge Portal to identify emerging medical concerns and trends.
• Assist the CINS/FINS Shelter Program Director and staff in the Quality Improvement Process and healthcare standards.

• Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with an active, clear Florida license (Chapter 464, Florida Statutes).
• Facilities must notify Contract Manager of personnel changes and report vacancies as they occur. Special alerts on staff licensures should be communicated in writing to the Contract Manager.

To practice, RNs must be licensed. Licensure requirements vary by state and typically include graduation from an approved program and NCLEX-RN. NCLEX-RN covers various topics including psychosocial and physiological integrity, health promotion, and infection control. RNs may have additional licensure requirements. LPNs must provide evidence of passage of the NCLEX-PN exam through a Board of Nursing approved program.
