The Underground Driller Operator performs a variety of tasks, operating various types of equipment primarily related to the construction of telecommunications and a Fiber-to-the-Home (FttH) Network. This position will operate heavy to light excavation equipment as well as place and bury fiber pathways, including the operation of horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment, and product support equipment.
Responsibilities- Operates excavation equipment for the installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
- Prepares construction sites for building, demolition, or excavation.
- Transports tools and other construction equipment to and from construction sites.
- Responsible for avoiding existing cables and digging according to blueprints and designated plans.
- Performs all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
- Set up and cleanup of the work site, including traffic and pedestrian control.
- Inspects and fuels vehicles before beginning shift.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs.
- Reads utility locates and coordinates day lighting of these facilities.
- Ensures all applicable permits and locates are complete and on-site.
- Inspects the work that is in progress to ensure that the workmanship conforms to specifications.
- Operates construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Ensuring sites are kept clean and safe.
- High school diploma or equivalent, and at least two years' experience. Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
- On-the-job training offered. Must be available to work long periods, including evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit.
- Ability to use hands to handle or feet.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to climb and balance.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs as needed.
- Ability to maintain all safety expectations.
- Works outdoors for extended periods.
- Exposed to extreme weather conditions.
- Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
- Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
- Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.
- Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades.
- Excellent mechanical skills.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to work as a team.
