Traffic Control Specialist

Job Summary
Under direct supervision, responsible for the orderly flow of passenger and vehicle traffic control inside and outside the terminal, ground transportation, and parking lot areas to assist the traveling public, airport authority, and tenants.
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce traffic‑related rules and regulations.
- Maintain traffic flow at curbside and parking lots as necessary.
- Monitor curbside, parking, and ground transportation areas for compliance with SMAA vehicle‑for‑hire operating procedures.
- Perform vehicle inspections as required.
- Ensure proper compliance of drivers violating rules and regulations.
- Direct pedestrian and passenger foot traffic in and around the terminal building including security checkpoint queuing area, tenant ticket counters, and other locations as required.
- Observe traffic flow to determine most effective procedures and make recommendations for improved services.
- Provide information and assistance to tenants and the general public.
- Assist in crosswalk areas as required.
- Administer first aid and CPR in accordance with American Red Cross approved practices.
- Alert police to suspicious persons and crimes in progress.
- Provide traffic control assistance to law enforcement officers and/or communication assistance in emergency and non‑routine situations.
- Provide testimony in a court of law when necessary.
- Assist in general maintenance (non‑repair) and cleaning of department equipment.
- Assist with Lost & Found items.
- Perform other related work as required.
Materials and Equipment Used
Radios, training materials, communications equipment, office equipment, golf carts, vehicles, emergency medical equipment.
Qualifications
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED. - Experience:
Two years of experience in traffic enforcement or customer service (preferred); law enforcement education or employment (preferred); military service (preferred). - Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License (or obtain within 30 days) with good driving record;
American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification (or obtain within one year). - Knowledge of traffic control practices and procedures, preferred.
- Knowledge of airport security practices and procedures, preferred.
- Skills:
Ability to enforce traffic rules with firmness, tact, and impartiality; react quickly and calmly in emergency and non‑routine situations; remain courteous and in‑control while serving and protecting the public; apply department policies to varied circumstances; communicate clearly, both oral and written; understand and follow oral instructions; prepare reports and logs accurately; develop and maintain effective relationships with superiors, employees, tenants, and the public;
use reference materials.
Work Environment
Individual works a varied schedule (evenings, nights, or days) and must be willing to work on short notice. This is a hands‑on position performed primarily outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement and extreme heat, vehicle exhaust, and noise.
Physical Requirements
Must be sufficiently fit to safely perform in a variety of situations, including adversarial and crowd‑related scenarios.
Mental Requirements
Rapid, appropriate, and calm response to non‑routine and emergency situations; work independently with minimal direct supervision; maintain courtesy and control.
Environmental Requirements
Outdoors during day, evening, and night; exposure to hazardous environmental conditions (heat, exhaust, noise, etc.).
