Role and ResponsibilitiesThe main component of this position is First-Assisting all specialties in our Surgical Suite. The NP/PA will be a vital part of our Surgical Services team, assisting across all surgical specialties, ensuring excellent service, collaboration, and patient outcomes in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The NP/PA serves as an additional patient care provider, augmenting and extending patient services provided by the health care team.
The NP/PA will work closely with team members and have a reasonable amount of autonomy in care and medical decision-making for patients.
What You’ll Do
- The Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) serves as the point of contact in augmenting care needs and extending patient services provided by the health care team. The APP will exercise patient care and medical decision-making autonomy within established clinical parameters regulated by the New York Board of Health Professions. Utilizes advanced practice skills to ensure delivery and efficient care to surgical patients in the hospital.
The APP will cross cover surgical specialties as needed.
The APP will provide a range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including admission, evaluation, history and physical exams, diagnosis and evaluation relevant to proposed procedure, development of plan of care, intraoperative technique and postoperative care. All services will be provided under a collaborating or supervising Physician arrangement. Incorporates age-specific assessment and intervention skills in all interventions and delivery of care. Participates in peri-operative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers.
Orders and reviews diagnostic tests. Identifies, prescribes, and manages pharmacological therapies. Determines effectiveness of the plan of care, reassesses and modifies plan of care as necessary. Makes referrals to other health professionals and community agencies. Admits/discharges to appropriate service. Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach. Serves on departmental and multidisciplinary committees and participates in quality improvement programs.
Maintains current professional knowledge and required documentation (license, certifications, infection control, ACLS/BLS, DEA, etc.). Acts as a resource to staff and implements educational programs as needed.
Additional responsibilities include recognizing major illness, timely documentation, confidentiality, professional communication, and contributing to a positive organizational image. Establishes open lines of communication and represents department services; participates in and promotes professional practice and education programs. Pursues advanced training/certification and participates in applicable committees. Ensures ongoing self-development and completion of scheduled education activities.
Qualifications include graduation from a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program (accredited by a credentialing center recognized by the Board of Health Sciences; For Nurse Practitioners, RNFA is required). Master’s level preparation preferred. Minimum of one (1) or two (2) years of Surgical Specialty or other specialty service experience preferred.
