Job Description

The Librarian primarily assists the Library Director and in turn the customers with questions related to materials and services. This position also performs a variety of duties related to the circulation of materials, special programing and assisting customers. The Librarian provides research assistance in person at service desk, by phone and electronically to customers. The Librarian is responsible for evaluation of services, goals, and alignment of those goals with the department and City long term objectives.

This position requires attention to detail, good organization skills, extensive knowledge of library reference, circulation, practices and procedures and the ability to work positively with the general public.

Works under the specific supervision of the Library Director. Basic supervision of the Library clerks on a day-to-day basis, acts as the first-line supervisor of the Library Clerks when the Library Director is absent.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assists the Library Director in overseeing the overall administration of the Library
    • Assists in planning, coordinating, and managing the programs, services, and activities of a Library.
    • Assists in developing and implementing operating policies and procedures.
    • May interface with the Library Board in the absence of the Director.
    • Assisting in developing and monitoring the budget.
    • Responsible for training subordinate library staff.
    • Resolves day-to-day operational problems/issues involving staff and/or customers.
    • Provides technical advice to Library staff.
  • Attends and presents at Library Board meetings and City Council meetings as directed.
  • Performs general duties related to the circulation of library materials; attends circulation and/or service desks; greets customers and assists with requests; initiates exchange of information required in the registration of accounts and the lending of library materials; checks in and checks out library materials; answers customer questions about services, programs, and collections; this position is specifically responsible for filling in the absence of a staff member (may need to fill in for a shift at short notice).
    • Segregates books and other materials needing repairs; mends books and materials as needed; applies dust jacket covers.
    • General upkeep of library to maintain orderliness, cleanliness, safety.
    • Assists customers in locating books and materials.
    • Shelves, carts, and shelf-reads to ensure the order of materials.
  • Employee is expected to have a good understanding of the work unit and its services to respond to inquiries.
    • Independently able to complete inventory, follow up on item search requests, follow the overdue procedures, and run reports in the Koha.
    • Documenting and/or opening cases general issues with customers, facilities and/or equipment as necessary.
    • Following up on questions requiring more research assistance as necessary.
  • Ability to identify technology needs and make recommendations.
    • Performs library related computer work such as entering and retrieving data.
    • Assists customers with a variety of technologies, including but not limited to: apps, websites, computers, Chromebooks, and Wi‑Fi.
    • Updating and maintaining public computers, devices, and other equipment.
    • Assist maintenance of the library RFID security system, AMH, self‑check units.
    • Able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting for library software and equipment.
  • Supervise assigned staff including, but not limited to, the following.
    • Answer questions about assigned tasks.
    • Evaluate the accuracy of work.
    • Oversee assigned staff during their designated shifts.
  • Cataloging and classification of library materials, including analysis of current collection and general maintenance of current collection.
  • Coordinates service operations with other library services and functions, develops programs and services to meet specific needs.
    • Prepares, evaluates, and creates with the delivery of special programs and services (children, adult, and young adult).
    • Conducts tours for children, classes and civic groups.
    • Prepares and presents library programs and supervises program presentation by volunteers.
    • Evaluates program opportunities and requests to ensure they align with strategic goals and makes recommendations.
  • Attend professional meetings and training courses as required.
  • Shelves materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or similar program from an accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) years' supervisory or managerial experience in Libraries, with an emphasis on Customer Service.
Certifications
  • A valid Utah Driver's License.
  • First Aid.
  • CPR.
