Job Description & How to Apply Below

CMDC is hiring a Structural Engineer / Masonry Design Engineer for our Saskatoon office.

This is not a traditional consulting role. It is a chance to work with Canada’s national technical authority for masonry design, construction, education, research, and codes and standards development.

At CMDC, our engineers do more than design individual projects. They help shape how masonry is understood, designed, detailed, taught, specified, and built across Canada. One day you may be helping an engineer work through a masonry design question, the next you may be presenting to architects, visiting a job site with contractors, supporting research at the University of Saskatchewan, contributing to technical guides, or helping advance national codes, standards, and design tools.

We are looking for someone who is technically curious, comfortable speaking with people, and interested in a career path that combines engineering, construction, education, research, and industry leadership.

The role is based in Saskatoon, working closely with Sask Masonry, the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design, and CMDC’s national team of engineers.

This is a great opportunity for an EIT or P.Eng. who wants to build deep technical expertise while having a direct impact on the construction industry.

Why this role is different

Most structural engineering roles focus on one project at a time. This role gives you the opportunity to help support and influence an entire construction industry.

As part of CMDC, you may be involved in:

  • Helping engineers and architects solve practical masonry design and detailing questions
  • Supporting contractors and masons with technical issues that arise in the field
  • Delivering seminars and presentations to designers, contractors, students, and industry groups
  • Working with researchers and educators at the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design
  • Contributing to national CMDC technical resources, guides, courses, and design tools
  • Supporting broader work related to CSA standards, the National Building Code of Canada, and masonry design software such as MASS
  • Helping bridge the gap between the design office, the construction site, and the research community

This is a role for someone who enjoys engineering, but also enjoys people, communication, teaching, problem-solving, and seeing technical work make a real difference in practice.

About CMDC

The Canada Masonry Design Centre exists to encourage the effective use of masonry through research, education, technical support, and industry advancement.

CMDC is a contractor-funded, contractor-focused national association with members across Canada and offices throughout the country. Our engineers support not only our contractor members, but also the broader design and construction community, including engineers, architects, educators, researchers, owners, and code/standard development bodies.

Our work includes technical support, design guidance, job site problem-solving, educational seminars, university teaching resources, research coordination, design software, textbooks, technical guides, and participation in codes and standards development.

What you will do

Industry outreach and technical support

You will work closely with Sask Masonry and the local masonry industry to provide technical support, build relationships, and promote the effective use of masonry construction in Saskatchewan.

This will include connecting with contractors, engineers, architects, owners, educators, and other stakeholders. You will answer technical questions, deliver presentations, attend meetings, visit construction sites, and help support practical solutions to design and construction issues.

Education, research, and technical communication

You will help deliver technical seminars and educational sessions for engineers, architects, contractors, students, and industry groups. You will also support masonry research and educational initiatives connected to the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design. This may include helping turn research findings into practical guidance that can be used by designers and contractors.
