Peace Officer, Protective Services
Summary:
The peace officer performs proactive and reactive general patrol duties as part of a platoon providing 24 hour/365 days per year service to the campus community. Through engagement with the campus community, the peace officer protects life and property, prevents crime, and engages in problem-solving initiatives. This role enforces and investigates violations of federal and provincial laws, and university bylaws in accordance with authorities.
Additionally, the peace officer provides information to victims, colleges, and units regarding non-criminal incidents which require a timely response.
The peace officer frequently works with other first responder agencies and community stakeholders and may be required to operate in the role of incident commander in the event of an emergency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responds to events in progress, health incidents, traffic collisions, alarms, campus events, disasters, emergencies, or other situations which require interventionInitiates investigations resulting from complaints, assigned files, or observation of activityApplies investigative procedures such as gathering information, interviewing witnesses and suspects, taking statements, seizing evidence, requesting specialized services, and concluding investigationsEnforces federal and provincial laws, and university bylaws, processes arrests, prepares cases, and presents evidence in courtAddresses and problem-solves immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crimeGathers and processes intelligence through field interviews and observationPerforms patrol functions such as attending complaints, executing warrants, investigating suspicious persons and activities, obtaining and recording information relevant to assigned duties, and performing traffic enforcementProvides qualitative advice and support to victimsBuilds relationships and partnerships with community members to understand their needsCompletes and submits required reports promptly and accuratelyConducts assigned duties and patrols using bicycles, on foot, or in marked vehiclesParticipates in special projects to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the unitCommunicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environmentEngages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusionDemonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgementIn the absence of a Corporal or Senior Peace Officer, Peace Officers will assume responsibility for ensuring training continues as scheduledUndertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the positionQualifications:
Education/
Experience:
A certificate or diploma in policing, sociology, psychology or a related field; a bachelor’s degree is preferredMinimum of two years’ experience in law enforcement, security, or related fieldSuccessful completion of the Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) or equivalent is mandatoryLicenses:
A valid class 5 driver’s licenseCertification in CPR First-Aid Level CCertification in Verbal Judo and Defensive Tactics is preferredSkills:
Strong interpersonal and communications skills including clear verbal articulation, writing, and listening skillsAbility to remain professional, composed, and organized under pressure or in high-stress situationsHigh degree of professionalism and integrityAbility to work independently, take initiative, and multi-task efficiently and effectivelyCapacity to coach, guide, and instruct new peace officers in departmental operationsAbility to build relationships and work effectively and collaboratively with a teamProficiency with technology and can easily adapt to technological changesHiring Process:
