Electron Microscopy Technician, Western College of Veterinary Medicine
Primary
Purpose:
To provide technical leadership and expertise in the operation and maintenance of the WCVM Imaging Centre’s Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and to prepare specimens for viewing under the TEM and SEM.
Nature of Work: This position reports to the manager of the WCVM Imaging Centre. The Technician works in the WCVM Imaging Centre as well as Histology Suite, supporting and training undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and other internal and external stakeholders, in various imaging techniques, primarily electron microscopy. The environment is dynamic and requires the ability to work independently, to multi-task, and to respond to requests from a variety of sources.
The work requires ongoing learning of new imaging techniques and technologies.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Consult with researchers to discuss their project goals, advise on equipment capabilities, and assist in planning sample processing and imaging protocols to achieve optimal results. Act as a resource for the entire USask research community and external clients for electron microscopyAssist faculty and students in research activities, including specimen preparation, operation of the electron microscopes and use of other equipment in the Imaging Centre and the Histology Suite. Duties may involve designing experiments, working out procedures, collecting data, data analysis and image processing, sourcing materials and supplies, maintaining records, writing reports, and helping with publicationsFollow established SOPs to maintain smooth operation of the Imaging Centre and Histology Suite in an efficient and timely manner to avoid downtime and delaysPrepare teaching materials and provide demonstrations of imaging facilities and sample preparation methods for WCVM and other collegesQualifications
Education: Relevant post-secondary education
Experience: Minimum five years of experience in all aspects of TEM and SEM, including standard imaging and specialized techniques such as Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Backscattered Electron (BSE) imaging, and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED). Extensive experience in processing samples for electron microscopy in materials science and/or biology-related fields is required.

Operation and maintenance of TEM and SEM, and ability to assist with interpretation of imaging resultsAbility to manage multiple tasks with attention to detailStrong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skillsAbility to work independently, and collaborativelyProficiency in computer applications for image capture and analysesSample preparation techniques, including negative staining, carbon coating, and sputter coatingPrior experience in biological sample processing is not required, but desirable (, collection, resin embedding, ultramicrotomy, staining for routine examination and for immunogold analyses, and critical point drying)Extensive experience with histology or other light microscopy techniques, including confocal, epifluorescence, and live-cell imaging, is considered an asset
