Vet Parasitology Specialist, Veterinary Microbiology

Purpose:
To provide support to parasitology research, diagnostics, and laboratory teaching in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.
Nature of Work: The position will conduct wildlife parasitology diagnostic services, identify digital and physical tick submissions, and consult with veterinarians and Prairie Diagnostic Services. In addition, the position will manage the daily operations of the Zoonotic Parasite Research Unit which is largely driven by the research program of the principal investigator (Dr Emily Jenkins) and graduate and undergraduate students.
Typical Duties/Accountabilities: Reporting to the department head, this position conducts traditional and molecular parasite identification (especially wildlife parasites), maintains biosafety permits and accreditation, and delivers the laboratory for the 2nd year undergraduate veterinary parasitology course (VTMC 336) and 4th year clinical microbiology rotation (VTMC 580). This position provides general supervision for personnel, and coordination of and planning of daily operation for the Zoonotic Parasite Research Unit under the direction of Dr.
Emily Jenkins.
Qualifications
Education: Completion of graduate degree(s) in parasitology; a veterinary degree, especially with board certification in veterinary parasitology, would be an asset.
Experience: Relevant work experience in diagnostic and research parasitology, supervision of personnel, and working in multidisciplinary groups
Skills: Technical skills in morphological, molecular, and immunological parasite detection, identification, and characterization; attention to detail in all tasks; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to function both independently and as part of a team; ability to assess situations and set priorities to meet actively fluctuating needs; ability to analyze new situations and apply existing standards and procedures appropriately;
and the ability to adapt to needs of research personnel and the veterinary profession.
