Medical Device Reprocessing Technician

Medical device reprocessing technicians, also referred to as surgical processors, perform an essential service within the health care setting: the provision of safe surgical equipment.

They assemble and provide surgical supply sets and carts for both scheduled and emergency surgeries, while ensuring equipment functionality and maintaining proper stock levels.

• Collect, disassemble, decontaminate, disinfect, assemble, function test, sterilize, package, store and distribute instruments, equipment and supplies used in surgical units
• Operate and maintain a variety of equipment used to process surgical instruments
• Assemble and provide surgical supply sets and carts for scheduled and emergency surgeries
• Inspect and maintain stock and functionality of supplies

• Prevent the spread of illness-causing bacteria through proper cleaning and sanitation procedures
• Ensure that medical sharps, such as scalpels, are sharp and ready for use
• Provide leadership and guidance to other surgical processors, students, and healthcare staff
• Often work independently, but may also collaborate with other medical device reprocessing technicians, physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals
• Work in a variety of settings, including hospital surgical departments, endoscopy units, and central sterile processing areas
