Position SummaryThe Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment within the M'Chigeeng Health Centre and associated Health Services facilities. Given the healthcare setting, this position plays a critical role in infection prevention and control by ensuring that clinical areas, offices, treatment rooms, public spaces, washrooms, and common areas are cleaned, disinfected, and maintained to a high standard.
The Janitor will support the health and safety of clients, visitors, and staff through routine cleaning, waste management, supply monitoring, and reporting of maintenance concerns.
- Maintain the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance of the Health Centre and other assigned Health Services facilities.
- Follow all workplace safety policies, infection prevention and control protocols, and cleaning procedures.
- Perform daily cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch surfaces, treatment rooms, offices, meeting spaces, waiting areas, washrooms, kitchens, and common areas.
- Conduct deep cleaning and sanitization of clinical areas, furniture, equipment surfaces, and washrooms in accordance with health and safety standards.
- Collect, remove, and properly dispose of garbage, recycling, and other waste materials on a daily basis.
- Replenish and monitor hygiene and sanitation supplies, including soap, hand sanitizer, paper towel, toilet paper, and cleaning products.
- Clean and maintain kitchen and staff break areas, including coffee makers, sinks, counters, refrigerators, cupboards, dishes, utensils, and pantry spaces.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and maintain all flooring surfaces.
- Clean interior glass, windows, doors, and partitions as required.
- Support infection control efforts during periods of increased illness activity, outbreaks, or public health concerns.
- Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify the Supervisor when replenishment is required to ensure adequate stock levels.
- Identify and report maintenance, safety, security, or facility concerns in a timely manner.
- Assist with room set-up and clean-up for meetings, training sessions, community programs, health clinics, and special events.
- Perform basic exterior maintenance, including clearing entrances, walkways, ramps, and stairs of snow, ice, and debris to ensure safe access to the facility.
- Complete required timesheets, cleaning logs, inspection checklists, and other documentation as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working in areas where client and health information may be present.
- Travel to Health Services program locations and facilities within M'Chigeeng as required.
- Perform other janitorial, cleaning, and facility maintenance duties as assigned by the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning, sanitizing, and infection prevention practices, particularly within healthcare settings.
- Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a busy environment.
- Reliable, dependable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong communication skills and ability to report concerns promptly and professionally.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, and repetitive movements.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals and biohazardous materials while following appropriate safety protocols.
- Work may be performed during evenings, weekends, or outside regular business hours as required.
- Travel between Health Services facilities and community locations within M'Chigeeng may be required.
- Valid G License
- Good relationships with and knowledge of the community
- Valid WHMIS certification
Previous janitorial experience

M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an original.
